PDF Signature Field Not Clickable — Fix

Drop your PDF here or click to browse

Supports PDF files up to 10MB

Sign your PDF in seconds — no registration, no downloads

You open the PDF, find the signature field, click it — and nothing happens. The cursor flickers into a hand pointer, maybe blinks, but no signing dialog opens. You try again. You refresh. You re-download the file. The PDF signature field is completely inert.

It's one of the stranger PDF problems because nothing looks broken. The field is clearly labelled. The layout looks right. But clicking it does exactly nothing.

Why PDF signature fields stop responding

Two things cause this. The first is document permissions: whoever created the PDF may have locked interactive elements — including signature fields — using edit restrictions. Standard viewers like Adobe Reader and Chrome's built-in PDF viewer honour those restrictions and silently block input. They don't explain why.

The second cause is export artifacts. PDFs converted from Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice often contain visual "signature boxes" — rectangles drawn on the page — with no real interactive form field underneath. They look like signature fields. They aren't. They're just shapes.

Either way, you don't need the field to be functional to get the document signed.

How to sign the PDF anyway — 5 steps

  1. Go to signmypdf.io/sign and upload your PDF.
  2. Click the signature button in the toolbar.
  3. Draw, type, or upload your signature.
  4. Drag it over the field area — or anywhere on the page.
  5. Click Download. The signed PDF saves instantly.

SignMyPDF places your signature as a visual layer directly on the page. It doesn't interact with the document's form fields at all, so locked fields, broken fields, and fake visual boxes make no difference. Your signature goes where you put it.

If the document is also refusing to accept typed text, the root cause is usually the same permissions issue. Our guide on handling read-only and locked PDFs walks through that specific fix.

Why most tools make this harder than it needs to be

  • Adobe Reader enforces document permissions. If the creator locked the file, Reader won't let you sign in the field — and won't explain why.
  • Browser PDF viewers are equally strict. They display the field visually but won't activate it when restrictions are in place.
  • Word and Docs conversions frequently produce fake fields. The rectangle is there; the interactive layer isn't.
  • Some tools silently fail. They let you go through the signing steps, then produce a file where the signature doesn't appear in the final output.
  • Paid plans gate the fix. Several tools require an active subscription before they'll handle restricted or unusual PDFs.

Why SignMyPDF handles this differently

  • Signatures are page overlays, not tied to form fields. Locked or non-existent fields become irrelevant.
  • No install, no plugin, no account required. Open the browser, upload, sign, download.
  • All processing happens in your browser — the file never reaches a server. Your documents stay private.
  • Free, no registration, no paywall at download.
  • Works on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, and Chromebook.

After downloading, open the signed PDF to confirm the signature appears where you placed it. On rare occasions the rendered position differs slightly from the preview — if that happens, fixing a signed PDF that looks wrong covers the most common causes.

FAQ

Why does the signature field look active but not respond? The field likely has user restrictions set by whoever created the document. Most PDF viewers honour those restrictions without explaining them. SignMyPDF bypasses this entirely by placing your signature as a page image layer, independent of the form field structure.

Is signing outside the official signature box legally valid? Yes. A signature's legal validity comes from the signature itself — the mark, name, or initials — not from whether it sits inside a pre-built box. Placing your signature in the correct area of the page carries the same legal weight.

Does this work on mobile? Yes. SignMyPDF runs entirely in the browser and works on any modern mobile browser. No app download required on iPhone, Android, or any other device.
