Sign your PDF in seconds — no registration, no downloads

You've been sent a contract, lease renewal, or employment letter — you need to sign it and return it by end of day. You don't own a printer. You don't have a scanner. Signing a PDF without a printer or scanner sounds like you're stuck, but it's a fully solved problem. The need to sign PDFs without printing comes up constantly — landlords, employers, contractors, and banks all send documents this way. The process takes about five minutes in a browser on any device you already own.

How to sign a PDF without a printer or scanner

  1. Go to signmypdf.io/sign on your phone, tablet, or laptop.
  2. Upload the PDF — drag and drop or tap to pick the file.
  3. Create your signature: draw it freehand, type your name in script, or upload a photo.
  4. Click the document to place your signature on the correct line.
  5. Download the signed PDF and send it back.

The whole sequence takes less time than finding a printer that's online and stocked with paper.

Why most tools still make this harder than it should be

The print-sign-scan workflow is decades old and a lot of software still assumes it's the only path. Even tools marketed as "digital signing" often mean they handle the scan step — the underlying assumption is that a physical signature lives somewhere.

  • Free tools almost always require an account before you can upload a file, let alone sign it.
  • Watermarks on free downloads are a common trap. You go through the whole process and the downloaded file has a banner across it — useless on a formal document.
  • Many tools send your file to a server during processing. That matters when the PDF contains your address, income details, or contract terms.
  • Mobile versions of desktop signing tools often break at inconvenient moments — the keyboard covers the signature line, or the download silently fails.
  • Some platforms still default to a "print this form, sign it, and scan it back" prompt as the recommended path.

Why SignMyPDF is different

  • Free, no registration, no paywall at download. Sign the document and download the finished file without entering an email address, creating an account, or providing payment details.
  • Three signature options. Draw freehand with a mouse or finger on a touchscreen, type your name in a handwriting-style font, or upload a photo of your handwritten signature — all three produce a clean result in the final PDF.
  • Files processed in your browser. Your document — which may include personal details, contract terms, or financial information — never leaves your device. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
  • Works on any device. Phone, tablet, or laptop. No app installation required. For a full mobile walkthrough, see signing PDFs on iPhone without an app.
  • No watermarks. The downloaded PDF looks exactly like the original — only your signature is added.

If the PDF you've received won't let you click to place a signature because it's locked or set to read-only, signing a locked or read-only PDF covers what to do before giving up.

FAQ

Is an electronically signed PDF legally valid without a wet ink signature?

Yes, for most purposes. The U.S. ESIGN Act and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act make electronic signatures legally equivalent to handwritten ones on contracts, leases, employment letters, and standard commercial agreements. Narrow exceptions exist — wills, certain real-estate mortgage instruments, and some court filings — but these aren't typical day-to-day PDFs. Check with the sending party if you're unsure whether they specifically require a physical signature.

My signature looks messy when I draw it on a laptop trackpad. What should I use instead?

The Type tab. Select a script font, type your name, and SignMyPDF renders it as a clean handwriting-style signature. It's the right choice when you don't have a touchscreen and trackpad drawing gives you a shaky result. The typed version is valid under the same electronic signature laws as a drawn one.

Does the recipient need a special tool to open the signed PDF?

No. The signature is embedded directly in the PDF file. Anyone can open it in any standard PDF viewer — Adobe Reader, a browser's built-in viewer, or a phone's Files app — and see the signature in place. No validation link, no account, no expiry on the recipient's side. For more on going account-free throughout the process, see signing PDFs without providing an email.
