PDF Signature Invalid Error — Fix It Free

You sign a PDF and send it. The recipient opens it in Adobe Acrobat and sees a yellow warning: "Signature's validity is unknown." Or a red X: "Invalid signature." Your PDF signature shows invalid even though you signed it yourself. Nothing was tampered with. Nobody forged the document.

The "invalid" error has nothing to do with whether your signature is real. It is a certificate trust problem specific to Adobe Acrobat — and understanding that distinction resolves the confusion quickly.

Why does a PDF signature show invalid?

PDF signatures come in two forms. The first is an image overlay — a drawn or typed name placed visually on the page. The second is a cryptographic certificate signature, where a digital certificate is embedded in the file and Adobe Acrobat checks whether it trusts the issuing certificate authority.

Adobe trusts only a curated list of certificate authorities. If the platform you used to sign the PDF has its own certificate authority, Adobe will not recognize it automatically. The "invalid" and "validity unknown" warnings come from that mismatch — not from tampering or forgery.

How to fix a PDF signature that shows invalid

  1. Ask the recipient to open the PDF in a different viewer — Preview on Mac, a browser PDF viewer, or a mobile PDF app typically skip these certificate warnings.
  2. In Adobe Acrobat: Edit > Preferences > Signatures > Verification > update the trust settings to include the signing platform's certificate authority.
  3. Request a re-signed copy using a platform whose certificate authority Adobe already trusts — DigiCert, GlobalSign, or Entrust.
  4. Use a tool that creates image-based signatures rather than certificate-based ones. No embedded certificate means no trust warning, in any viewer.

Step 4 is the permanent fix for most people. An image-based signature is visually identical and carries the same legal weight under ESIGN and UETA. The "invalid" warning is a technical artifact of how Adobe validates certificates, not a legal judgment on the signature itself. For a full explanation of what makes an electronic signature legally binding, electronic signature security explained covers the standards plainly.

Why certificate-based PDF signatures cause problems

  • Adobe Acrobat maintains a curated trust list. Signatures from smaller or platform-specific certificate authorities trigger the warning on every fresh installation.
  • Most recipients cannot navigate Preferences > Trust settings without IT help. To them, "invalid" means the signature is fake.
  • Certificate chains break when a signing platform rotates or revokes its certificate. Legitimate signatures from months ago suddenly show "invalid" with no change to the document content.
  • Mobile PDF viewers often ignore certificate validation data entirely, producing inconsistent results: valid on desktop, no indication on a phone.
  • Different PDF viewers validate differently. A file that shows "valid" in one application can show "invalid" in another using the same PDF specification.

Why SignMyPDF avoids the certificate warning entirely

  • Signatures are image overlays — no embedded certificate, no trust chain, nothing for Adobe to validate or reject.
  • The signed PDF opens cleanly in Adobe Acrobat, macOS Preview, Android PDF readers, iOS PDF viewers, and every browser-based viewer. No yellow triangles, no red Xs.
  • Free, no registration, no paywall at download. Files processed in browser — your PDF is never uploaded to a server.
  • Nothing expires, nothing gets revoked, and nothing fails a trust check six months from now.

If the signature placement also looks unexpected — wrong position or different size than you placed it — why your signed PDF can look different from the original covers the rendering issues that often accompany certificate signature problems.

FAQ

Is a PDF with an "invalid signature" warning legally binding? Usually yes. The warning means Adobe cannot verify the certificate trust chain — it does not mean the signature is fake or the document was tampered with. Under ESIGN and UETA, electronic signatures are legally binding regardless of whether a PDF viewer shows a green checkmark. Courts and regulators evaluate intent and consent, not whether Adobe validated a particular certificate. For high-stakes or disputed documents, confirm requirements with the other party or their counsel.

Can I re-sign a PDF to remove the "invalid" warning? The cleanest fix is to sign a fresh copy using a tool that creates image-based signatures. The overlay approach produces no trust warnings in any viewer. Keep the original certificate-signed version if the document history matters and provide the image-signed copy to the recipient.

Why does it show valid on my computer but invalid for the recipient? Your device already trusts the signing platform's certificate — you used the platform before and your trust store was updated at that point. The recipient's device has never interacted with that certificate authority. Different trust stores produce different validation results for the exact same file.
