What PDF encryption actually does

When you password protect a PDF, the tool applies an encryption algorithm to the file's data. The current standard is AES-128 (Advanced Encryption Standard, 128-bit key) — the same algorithm used in online banking, secure messaging, and government data systems. The document's contents become ciphertext: without the correct key derived from your password, the file can't be read.

The two passwords most people don't know about

Open password (user password): Required to open and read the document. Without it, the file can't be viewed at all.

Permissions password (owner password): Doesn't block opening the file, but restricts what the reader can do — print, copy text, fill forms, or annotate. Use this when you want the document readable but not reproducible.

FAQ

Can someone crack a PDF password? In theory, yes — brute force attacks exist. In practice, AES-128 with a reasonably strong password is not practically breakable with consumer hardware. The weak point is almost always the password itself, not the encryption. Avoid single words, dates of birth, or anything a person who knows you could guess.

What happens if I forget the password I set? There's no recovery path for a forgotten password on an AES-encrypted PDF — that's intentional. The same property that keeps an attacker out keeps a forgetful owner out too. Store your passwords in a password manager, and communicate them to recipients by phone or text, never in the same email as the document.
